The opposite of addiction is connection

Pivot Executive Director Rev. Richard Williams recently joined half a dozen Pivot students at the Westport Country Playhouse for a performance of Eboni Booth’s “Primary Trust.”
For James, one of the students, it was his first time seeing a live play—and he was blown away. He identified deeply with Kenneth, the isolated protagonist whose quiet struggle with trauma and addiction is slowly transformed by friendship and community.
In the post‑show discussion (pictured), Richard shared how closely the play mirrors what he sees every day at Pivot: men coming out of deep loneliness, discovering brotherhood, and finding healing in Christ‑centered community.
“As the play showed us, the opposite of addiction is connection,” he said.
The discussion was led by Artistic Director Mark Shanahan, and included TEAM Westport chair Harold Bailey Jr., and Liz Morgan, Director of Community Relations at Silver Hill Hospital, New Canaan.
“Primary Trust” runs at Westport Country Playhouse through May 2.
